Super Simple Earth Day Activities: Fun and Easy Holiday Projects for Kids (Super Simple Holidays) – Booklist

This Super Simple Holidays series title lives up to its name by providing fun and easy Earth Day crafts for kids. The book briefly mentions some ways people around the world celebrate Earth Day, including participating in marches and rallies, picking up trash, or planting trees. Several pages of small color photos show the materials needed for each of the book’s 10 craft projects. Each has clear, easy-to-follow instructions and contains a full-page color photo as well as smaller ones highlighting certain steps in the instructions. Some of the things kids can make include a global greeting card, planet garland, earthworm snacks, a seed-sounds guessing game, a mobile, bird feeder, and plastic-cup insects. This appealing book supports STEM and Common Core State Standards. Icon symbols indicate when adult supervision is needed—such as when a hot glue gun or sharp tool is required, or an ingredient includes nuts. Most libraries never have enough holiday-themed books, so this one is sure to be popular.

Super Simple Holidays – School Library Journal, Series Made Simple

The projects in each of these crafting guides combine skills young people already possess (cutting, gluing) and talents requiring a bit more precision (measuring, tracing). The necessary materials in each title are mostly common classroom items: construction paper, tape, yarn, glue—and a few special supplies such as air-dry clay or a battery-powered candle. Most of the end results are decorative (wreaths, garlands, ornaments, and mobiles), but kids will also find a number of games, costume items, cards, and edible crafts. Many can be adapted to fit other themes: the patriotic wreath craft in Presidents’ Day would work any time of year, as could the “star-spangled wind sock.” Thomas Jefferson’s wig, made of cotton balls glued to a paper bag, is sure to elicit laughs. Occasional photos of real kids in action add credence to the achievability of these endeavors. This series contains a bevy of workhorse activities and is an excellent addition to maker spaces.
