At first blush, the topic of parental ratings in the media might seem dull. Yet this nonfiction resource brings to light numerous relevant and relatable corollaries that students will find engaging. . . . A history of censorship and media ratings is presented, beginning with the antiquated Hays Code that banned themes such as interracial couples or murder on screen. A time line of other important dates, such as the Vchip and the creation of the PG-13 rating, is included in the appendix. Primary sources such as quotes from experts and lawmakers are followed by critical thinking questions, making this easily implemented as a classroom resource or to inspire writing assignments that align to various educational standards.
